Well over 200 people now subscribe.
Additionally, it apparently gets forwarded to hundreds more.
2nd Congressional District News
The primary election is June 14, 2005.
And the general election is August 2, 2005.
Prediction (Never in doubt, and rarely correct)
Although I've made predictions in other races, I wasn't planning to make a
prediction in this one.
However, I've very recently begun to get a real sense about who will win.
Tom Brinkman will be our next
Congressman.
I'm not going to pretend to be unbiased, but there are several points to
consider.
- This will be a very low turnout race
- Name ID voters will not be motivated to vote
- The people who vote will be largely the most conservative and the most
issues driven
- Those voters will be voting Pro-Life, Anti-Tax, Pro-Gun Rights, and
Pro-Limited Government
Tom Brinkman
not only supports those issues, but he has a proven track record of
taking a leadership position on those issues.
I predict that Tom Brinkman
will get that message out and that he will win.
Taking Heat
I'm taking heat for sending out candidate campaign information.
In the May
15 edition of my newsletter, I included a paragraph submitted by Steve Austin.
I have also forwarded one campaign e-mail each for
Tom Brinkman, Bob McEwen,
and David R. Smith.
No other campaign has submitted anything to me to send out.
If I get requests from other candidates to send out similar information,
I will probably honor those requests.
(Avoiding "heat" is one of the reasons I generally prefer to stay out
of primaries.)
Is a State Central Committeeman required to be fair to all candidates in a
primary?
Long time readers of
The Becker Report
know that I am generally fair to all
Republican candidates.
They also know that I usually find nice things to say about the candidates.
There is no requirement to be fair, balanced,
or consistent.
It is my personal choice and not a requirement due to the office that I hold.
Has John Becker been working hard for only one candidate?
I am very strongly in favor of one particular candidate.
However, I often find myself defending and advocating for other candidates.
I signed petitions for several of the candidates and did not sign a petition for
my favorite candidate.
Additionally, I gave names, phone numbers, and other information to every
candidate who asked.
I have also introduced multiple candidates to multiple people.
While campaigning door-to-door, if the voter mentions or asks about another
candidate, I mostly say positive things about that person.
Furthermore, I introduce myself as a volunteer and rarely give a business
card or mention my office.
When I do, it is always in the context of "another hat that I wear."
While not required to do so, I prefer to separate my duties as a State Central
Committeeman and a private citizen.
Since John Becker has a favorite candidate in this race, why doesn't he use The Becker Report
as a campaign tool?
I've never claimed to be unbiased, but I enjoy working with all of the
candidates.
They also seem to appreciate my magnanimity.
Part of my job is to disseminate information district wide.
Advocating and reporting on only one candidate would be a disservice to my
readers.
I try to be friendly to everybody, and this newsletter is one way to do that.
Will John Becker endorse a candidate?
After I contacted the Ohio Republican Party,
they verified that, as a State Central Committeeman, I am free to
endorse and/or advocate for any candidate(s) in a primary.
However, I will not endorse in this race.
I'm concerned that some people may confuse my endorsement with that of the ORP.
The ORP has made no endorsement in this race.
And neither has Rob Portman.
Just for the record, I intend to support whoever wins this primary.
Endorsements
All eleven candidates were asked to let me know what organizations are endorsing
them.
I specified that I would not list any personal endorsements because they are too
numerous (and sometimes questionable).
If they did not respond, I looked on their web sites.
Steve Austin - None that I could find
Tom Bemmes - None that I could find
Tom Brinkman
Pat DeWine - None that I could find
Peter Fossett - None that I could find
Bob McEwen
Eric Minamyer - None that I could find
Doug Mink - None that I could find
Jeff Morgan - None that I could find
Jean Schmidt
David R. Smith - None that I could find
House Banking Scandal
I made a comment in an e-mail that, "I've been defending Bob McEwen
better than Bob McEwen has
been defending Bob McEwen."
A few days later Bob McEwen
called me to discuss the issue.
I explained to him my understanding of the House Banking Scandal, and he confirmed that I am correct:
- The House Bank, at that time, was not computerized and relied on the
original pencil and ledger system of the 1800s
- Although the deposits were submitted, the clerk didn't seem to think that it
was important to log them into the ledger before logging in the cleared
checks
- In the past, nobody cared that accounts were technically
"overdrawn"
- The least wealthy members did not keep large balances and were therefore
the most vulnerable to ledger entry timing issues
- The media smelled blood and the rest is history
If my understanding is correct, Bob McEwen
is a victim of the House Banking Scandal, not a perpetrator of it.
Gubernatorial Election News
Ken Blackwell,
Betty Montgomery, and Jim Petro
remain the three candidates.
Phil Heimlich is with Jim Petro
and remains the only named candidate for Lt. Governor.
U.S. Senate Election News
Senator
Mike DeWine and Retired USAF Lt.Col. John Mitchel are the only two candidates.
Secretary of State Election News
Ann Womer
Benjamin, Greg Hartmann, and
Jim Trakas are the candidates.
Rob Montgomery was also mentioned.
State Auditor Election News
Mary
Taylor and
David
Varda remain the only candidates.
Attorney General Election News
Ron O'Brien, David Yost, and Tim Grendell
appear to be candidates.
Joe Deters also mentioned that he is considering it.
State Treasurer Election News
Jennette Bradley remains
the only candidate.
6th Congressional District News
Danny Harmon has been
campaigning.
Lawrence County Commissioner, Jason Stephens, told me that he is interested.
I've also heard that Chuck
Blasdel is interested.
Past Events
June 7, 2005
The final candidate's forum was at Lebanon Junior High School.
All eleven candidates had the questions in advance and were well prepared.
Although some mud slinging occurred, the candidates did a good job
sticking to the wide variety of issues.
Peter Fossett did
a great job courting the left wing of the Party.
I thought that it was particularly classy and gentlemanly the way that
Steve Austin closed by thanking
all of his opponents.
About 100 people attended, including John Ashbrook, Jeff Hardin, Peter Schmidt, and Lori Viars.
June 3, 2005
About 250 people attended, the Citizens for
Community Values candidate's forum in Montgomery.
It was quite a yawn compared to the one in Anderson Twp.
The legendary Whistleblower and I
sat in the back of the room and watched.
Pat
DeWine
boycotted the event for reasons that only he understands.
Several Democrats spoke, and they sounded fairly conservative.
Mary Anne Christie attended with her husband.
I also spoke with Paula Westwood, Greg Quinlan, Barry Sheets, and greeted Phil Burress and
Peter Schmidt in the back of the room.
From Brown County, I saw Michelle Jowers, Aaron Hines and Tim Guthrie and his
family.
It was also good to see Alan and Judy Martin and Joe Platt again.
June 2, 2005
I participated in a conference call with ORP Chairman Bennett.
He addressed the issue of "Coingate."
The Chairman also opened it up to tell him what we are hearing on the streets.
I told him what I've been hearing during my door-to-door campaigning.
Additionally, I asked the Chairman, on a scale of 1 to 10, how big the "Coingate"
issue is.
June 1, 2005
My day began by riding to Columbus with
Tom Brinkman and Ben Hill.
I had a nice discussion with Rick Hatcher.
He is the Assistant HR Director for State
Treasurer Jennette Bradley.
Afterward, Joe Uecker and I enjoyed
lunch together.
It was also a pleasure to meet Joe's Administrative Assistant, Steve Clegg.
Later that evening, I attended a candidate's forum sponsored by the Anderson Twp Republican Club.
Before the event began, Liz McEwen and I talked about the House Banking Scandal.
She helped me to understand that her husband did nothing wrong.
I was stunned to hear
Pat
DeWine
hammer away at Bob McEwen
and Jean Schmidt.
The crowd didn't like it either.
Some stormed out and those who remained booed him off the stage.
Afterward, the club members rated only Tom Brinkman
and Bob McEwen as
"Highly Qualified."
May 31, 2005
It was another one of those long days.
I rode to Columbus with Tom Brinkman and
Jonathan Crisp.
We met Danny
Bubp and Joe Uecker for lunch in the
mall.
At the end of a long hard day in Columbus, Tom Brinkman,
Jonathan Crisp, and I traveled to the candidate's forum in New Boston (a few
miles east of Portsmouth).
It was good to see many friends including P.J. Wenzel, Kay Reynolds, Doug Cade,
Kevin Craft, Harty Wallingford, Rick Jones, Rodney Barnett, Jason Stephens, and
the legendary Whistleblower.
Rodney Barnett emceed the event and I was one of the people screening questions
from the audience.
All eleven candidates participated.
The event was well organized and broadcasted live on a local radio station (WPAY).
Over 200 people attended.
May 20, 2005
The Republican State Central Committee held its' Spring meeting.
Adam Greenslade no longer works for Chairman Bennett.
The Chairman now works for Mr. Greenslade.
Adam was sworn in as a State Committeeman to replace Rex Damschroder in the 26th
Senate District.
Rex resigned his State Committee seat after accepting a position on the Freemont
City Council.
Chairman Bennett's new assistant is Pat Melton.
After receiving 125 applications, all ORP Field Rep positions are now filled.
Of my five counties, Lindsay Shuba is the ORP Rep for Lawrence County and SE
Ohio.
P.J. Wenzel has my other four counties as part of SW Ohio.
As you might recall the ORP has created 21 Steering Committee Regions.
Several regional chairs have been named.
Kay Reynolds is region 16 (Scioto, Pike, Ross, and Pickaway Counties).
Kay Ayres is region 17 (Brown, Adams, Highland, Clinton, and Fayette Counties).
Scott Owens is region 19 (Clermont, Warren, and Butler Counties).
Buck Niehoff is region 20 (Hamilton County).
Jason Stephens is region 21 (Lawrence, Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, and Meigs
Counties).
"Lessons Learned" from the November election:
- A balanced, statewide target strategy is more effective
- Focusing on turnout paid off
- High turnout does not always favor Democrats
- Investing in voter registration paid off
- Outsourcing political programs, such as voter registration and turnout, to
'527' groups is risky and potentially unreliable
- Ohio's urban counties are losing population, while the exurban and rural
counties are gaining
- The battle for votes in Ohio is shifting to the exurban counties
surrounding the metropolitan areas
- Build an effective statewide organization down to the grassroots level
- Practice makes perfect
Urban, Exurban, and Rural Goals were also presented.
The Democrats have also learned a few lessons:
- The Ohio Democrat Party is hiring fulltime regional staff
- America Coming Together (ACT) has established a permanent HQ
- Campaigns will no longer be seven months. They will now be four years.
John Allison, Governor Taft's Chief of Staff, gave a presentation on tax reform,
the budget, and a bond issue.
Dawn Sugasa, ORP Finance Director, discussed Trailblazers and revenue goals.
Chairman Bennett also discussed the Ohio
Restoration Project, biased polls against Governor Taft, and adding an
ethics component to ORP campaign schools.
All of us were given a binder rich with reference information.
We also got a folder with information on potential 2005 ballot issues, a May 19,
2005 State Chairman's Meeting, and other interesting information.
Please let me know if you would like any additional details.
May 18, 2005
A large number of people that I've never seen before attended the Clermont County
Central Committee meeting in Batavia.
They thought it was important to show their support for Jean Schmidt.
The endorsement vote for Jean was an overwhelming 61 to 26.
After the vote, she gave a great acceptance speech and was then congratulated by
her many supporters.
Chairman Tim Rudd stated that he is looking forward to finally having a
Congressman from Clermont County.
Although he knew that the endorsement vote was inevitable, Bob McEwen
greeted attendees at the door with free pizza and beverages.
He and David R. Smith addressed the
crowd after the endorsement vote was taken.
Tom Brinkman was unable to attend
because he was in Columbus maintaining his 100% voting record.
