Editorial
The Cincinnati Post published one of my editorials in their April 29, 2005
edition.
It was also in the May 11, 2005 edition of The Community Journal.
Dear Editor:
Does the President have the Constitutional right to name whomever he pleases to
be Federal judges? According to Section 2 of Article II, he certainly does. But
the Constitution also requires the Senate to give its’ “advice and consent.”
“Advice and consent” clearly refers to a simple majority vote unless
otherwise specifically stated. For example, that same section requires a
two-thirds majority for the passage of treaties.
There has been much talk about a “nuclear option.” The press has failed to
report that the Democrats went “nuclear” when they launched an unprecedented
filibuster in clear violation of the Constitution.
To restore the rule of law, the Republicans have devised a plan: A simple
majority can declare this Democrat filibuster illegal and contrary to the
Constitution. With the filibuster broken, the full Senate will then be able to
vote on the President’s nominees.
The Democrats have threatened a nuclear response by shutting down most
government functions. This obstinacy may help to explain why the voters of this
great country have turned to the Republicans for the rule of law, leadership,
and good government.
John Becker
Republican State Central Committeeman
Ohio's 14th Senate District
2nd Congressional District News
The primary election is June 14, 2005.
And the general election is August 2, 2005.
A long list of names has surfaced to replace former Congressman Rob Portman.
Eleven Republicans have successfully filed petitions but not all are actively campaigning.
The seven that I've seen are as follows:
The way I see it:
Four candidates have a reasonable chance to win this election.
It appears that Pat
DeWine is the front-runner in this race.
His name recognition, organization, and bank account is unparalleled.
It also appears that Bob McEwen
has a lock on the rural counties.
He is highly respected and loved by the people that he represented during the
1980s and early 1990s.
I expect Jean Schmidt to do
very well in Clermont County.
Furthermore, she appeals to women voters everywhere.
Tom Brinkman will do well in Hamilton
County.
He is the best friend that Ohio's taxpayers and gun owners have ever had.
Several candidate debate forums are planned:
May 23 - Hamilton County TCV and Republican Women's Club at the Sharonville
Convention Center from 7:00 to 9:00
May 31 - Scioto County GOP at 7:00PM
June 1 - Anderson Republican Club at Mercy HealthPlex
June 3 - Citizens for Community Values at Montgomery Assembly of God
June 11 - First Annual Ronald Reagan Memorial Picnic at the Adams County Fairgrounds in
West Union
Congratulations to Jean Schmidt
who overwhelming won an endorsement recommendation from the Clermont County Republican Executive
Committee.
It's a safe bet that the full Central Committee will affirm the Executive
Committee's decision on May 18, 2005.
Clermont County's endorsement will provide her many advantages.
Steve Austin sent me the following:
I, Steve Austin, am declaring my candidacy for the second congressional
district of Ohio. My tenure as a life-long resident has made me familiar
with the needs and issues of the people who reside here. I graduated
from Ohio University with a B.S. in Education and later attended Miami
University where I achieved my M.S. in Education. My experience as a
teacher with the Adams County/Ohio Valley Local School District for
thirty years familiarized me with the educational needs of our district,
state, and nation. I am prepared to meet the challenges associated with
our district and work to resolve these problems. Only through a spirit
of cooperation and unification will we be able to achieve a solution to
the problems that hinder our nation. If elected, I hope to use my
experience to draft and support legislation that will benefit the needs
of everyone that I serve. I look forward to serving this district as
United States Representative.
Spotlight on Aaron Hines
Brown County rising star Aaron Hines is a very bright and hard working student
at Northern Kentucky University.
About a week ago, he accepted a position, at $1500 per month, with the Pat
DeWine campaign.
Aaron did a great job for Pat erecting “Pat DeWine for Congress” signs all
over Brown County.
After extensive soul searching, Aaron concluded that he was in the wrong job.
He quietly and gracefully resigned on May 13, 2005.
That was a gutsy move on his part.
What college kid wouldn’t want to make an extra $1500 per month?
Being as Pat DeWine is the front-runner, Aaron may have also sacrificed a
potential position as a Federal employee.
Aaron has decided not to join another campaign at this time.
I suspect that Aaron has a bright future ahead of him and I wish him the best in
his future pursuits.

Congressional candidates included Steve Austin,
Pat
DeWine, and Jean Schmidt.
I spoke on behalf of Tom Brinkman.
May 10, 2005
It was a very long day.
I met Tom Brinkman at his home in Mt. Lookout at 7:30 AM.
We drove downtown to drop off his petitions for Congress.
From there, we went to Columbus.
I participated in one of his meetings and then attended the House session as an
observer.
Representative
Ron Hood joined us for lunch at the "Two
Days in May" event sponsored by Attorney General Jim Petro.
At the luncheon, we met Mike Arens, Pete Couladis, and Jeff Eichhorn.
The event was held at the Columbus Convention Center and well over 1,000 people
attended.
Back at the capitol, Tom and Ron attended a caucus meeting while I chatted with
Chief Deputy Auditor David
Varda outside.
Afterward, Tom and I drove to the American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon.
Angie Duduit was our tour guide.
She introduced us to several people.
Everyone was very hospitable and answered all of our questions.
It was a fascinating tour and we now appreciate the important work that they do.
From Piketon, we drove into Portsmouth for an interview with the Portsmouth Daily Times.
We then briefly attended the Scioto County Central Committee meeting in New
Boston.
Congressional candidates included Steve Austin,
Tom Brinkman, and Jean Schmidt.
We bolted out of New Boston and raced to Georgetown to attend the Brown County
Central Committee meeting.
The membership voted for their favorite candidates before Tom Brinkman
addressed the committee.
The vote results were as follows:
Bob McEwen - 9 Votes
Pat
DeWine - 4 Votes
Tom Brinkman - 2 Votes
Steve Austin - 1
Vote
Tom Bemmes, Jean Schmidt, and David R. Smith
- 0 Votes
Congratulations to Brown County Clerk of Courts Tina Meranda.
She was selected by the Central Committee to apply for admission to The Jo Ann Davidson Ohio
Leadership Institute.
Congratulations to Michelle Jowers.
She was elected to be the new President of the Brown County Republican Club.
Tom Brinkman treated the Jowers family
and me to ice cream at the local UDF.
My day ended when I finally got home just before midnight.
And I was compensated in the usual manner. (I work for food.)
May 6, 2005
The Union Township (Clermont County) GOP sponsored a bowling party and fundraiser at Cherry Grove Lanes.
About 50 people attended and many door prizes were awarded.
Our net proceeds were $1,450.
My family had the pleasure of sharing a lane with Mary Lynne Birck's family.
Pat
DeWine and Jean Schmidt
were the only two Congressional candidates to attend.
Senator Tom and Emily Niehaus also attended.
Fortunately, Emily has completely recovered from her recent health problems.
The three of us, along with Linda Fraley, had a very nice chat.
May 5, 2005
A big crowd gathered in Batavia for the National Day of Prayer.
Commissioner
Bob Proud emceed the event.
Before it ended, I rushed off to the Queen City Club to hear a
presentation by Fred Steeper.
Mr. Steeper was hired by Ken Blackwell to do polling and serve as a consultant.
From the numbers that Mr. Steeper presented, it was very clear that the
gubernatorial race is over and Ken Blackwell is our new governor.
A $3,000 commercial was shown featuring Tom Niehaus for State Senate. (He won.)
About 20 people attended the event including Kreg Allison, Joe Deters, Chip
Gerhardt, Mike Hernon, Betty Hull, Chris Monzel, Brent Sanders, and Mary Taylor.
Later that evening Bob
Proud and I walked the track together at Veterans Park in Union Township for
another National Day of Prayer celebration.
Steve Austin was the only
Congressional candidate to attend.
Afterward, Steve and his son, Jared, and I enjoyed dessert at the Eastgate
Frisch's.
May 4, 2005
My day began by hitching a ride to Columbus with
Tom Brinkman.
I had hoped to team up with some of the folks from Ohio Right to Life who were
busy lobbying the legislators.
During the afternoon, I took a walk over to the ORP and had a friendly
discussion with Deputy Political Director Jonathan Gormley.
Later that evening, I attended the Anderson Township Republican Club meeting.
About 35 people (including the Whistleblower)
attended.
Chili and salad was on the menu in addition to soft drinks, beer, and near beer
(NA).
Congressional candidates included Tom Bemmes, Tom Brinkman,
Bob McEwen, Jean Schmidt,
and David R. Smith
Mike McNamara represented Pat
DeWine.
Pollster Al Tuchfarber gave a very informative presentation.
Russ Jackson released the results of a poll conducted of the membership.
His list of potential Congressional candidates is lengthy.

May 3, 2005
Tom Brinkman and I rode together to Columbus.
I enjoyed getting to know Tom's Administrative Assistant, Kara Joseph.
She is a lovely lady and Tom is fortunate to have her on his team.
I also enjoyed observing the House Session for my first time.
And I was able to watch Tom Brinkman, Danny
Bubp, Ron Hood,
Randy
Law, and Joe Uecker hard at work.
Later that afternoon, I had a meeting with Sante Ghetti in the Rhodes Tower.
We talked about Jennette Bradley's
need to fill Field Rep positions throughout Ohio.
The position in SW Ohio sounded like the type of job that I would enjoy and be
good at.
Afterward, I sat in on a pro-life caucus meeting in the Riffe Center.
In addition to Tom Brinkman, Joe Uecker and Randy Law
were also there.
May 2, 2005
Lori Viars provided the following regarding the Butler County Lincoln Day Dinner:
The Butler County Lincoln Day Dinner was a well-attended event that quite obviously
raised a lot of money. As you entered the Sharonville Convention Center, you saw
a beautiful panorama of stars projected on the front wall. Words can't describe
the breath-taking effect. Beautifully decorated silent auction tables also
caught your eye. Karl Rove was the big draw and he praised the Butler County GOP for
playing such a leading role in re-electing President Bush. Several others spoke
including Senator Bill Harris, Ken Blackwell,
Jennette Bradley, and Betty Montgomery. Second District Congressional candidates
Tom Brinkman, Bob McEwen
and Pat
DeWine were there. A "Who's Who" of office holders and
Republican leaders added to the lovely evening. Compliments also on Butler
County's Lincoln Dinner program---very nice.
It was an honor to share a table with Tom Brinkman and Jeff Eichhorn.
Some of the people I saw included Joe Uecker,
Bill Herdman, and Danny
Bubp from Clermont, Brown, and Adams Counties respectively.
From other counties, I saw George Glover, Chip Gerhardt, Patty Clancy, Bob Schuler,
Lara Maston, Mike Hernon, Christian Lobb, Carl Enslen, Crunch Reyna, Brent
Sanders, Phil Heimlich, David
Varda, Ann Womer
Benjamin, Mike
Barrett, Mike Fox, Russ Jackson, and Kreg Allison.
April 27, 2005
Phil Heimlich hosted an event for Jim Petro
at the Havana Martini Club in Cincinnati.
To my knowledge, Jeff Hardin and I were the only two from Clermont County.
The place was packed with supporters.
Food and adult beverages were free for all.
Tom Brinkman was the only Congressional
candidate that attended.
April 25, 2005
I enjoyed dinner hosted by the Brown County Chamber of Commerce.
It was my pleasure to share a table with Danny
Bubp, Michelle Jowers, Doris
Charles, and Ed Fuhrmann.
Pat
DeWine briefly attended.
Jennifer Black and Peter Schmidt represented Jean Schmidt.
April 25, 2005
About 55 people attended the Pastors' and Public Servants' Prayer Breakfast at
Mary's Country Kitchen in Georgetown.
The event was part of the Brown County National Day of Prayer.
Ken Johnson was the keynote speaker and music was provided by Pastor Scott
Hennig and Kelly Cole.
April 21, 2005
Lori Viars provided the following:
Well over 500 people gathered in downtown Cincinnati in the Hyatt ballroom for
the Pregnancy Center East
banquet. Beautiful tables set with hydrangeas greeted guests as they came to
provide practical help for unborn children and their mothers. Keynote speaker Ken Blackwell
told how Mother Teresa used to examine her hands daily, asking,
"What have you done today?" Blackwell thanked the guests for using
their hands to reach out to young women facing unplanned pregnancies. He urged
the audience to take their beliefs to the public square and quoted a Scripture
from Psalms that asks, "If the foundation be destroyed, what will the
righteous do?" The Pregnancy Center East staff and board are to be
commended on a beautiful evening for a great cause.
Cathy Brinkman provided an additional perspective:
Several of the candidates who will be running to replace Congressman Rob Portman
attended the Pregnancy Center East
annual dinner. One of those candidates, Rep.
Tom Brinkman, Jr., has been a supporter of this annual event and the mission of
the Center for about twenty (20) years. Last year, Brinkman introduced the bill
to restrict RU-486. That bill passed the House and Senate and became law last
Fall. Master of Ceremonies, Fr. Cunningham commended Brinkman for his past
effort, which is estimated to save 600 babies each year. Brinkman was given a
huge round of applause by those who attended when Fr. Cunningham announced that
this year Tom Brinkman, Jr. has introduced legislation in the Ohio House, which
will ban all abortion in Ohio.
It was my pleasure to be a guest of Tom and Edna Brinkman Sr.
Their table also included Tom and Cathy Brinkman Jr., Allan and Judy Martin, and
Jeff Capell.
I was excited to get to meet and chat with Dr. John and Barbara Willke for the
first time.
While visiting with Ken and Rosa Blackwell, I made the following comment to Mrs.
Blackwell: "My wife is a Latin teacher at Walnut Hills [High School]. She
is very pleased that you were selected to be the new Superintendent [of the
Cincinnati Public Schools]. I thought that you would want to know that."
The big smiles on the Blackwell's faces were evidence that my comment was well
received.
I was also pleased to see Ed Humphrey and
Joe Uecker again.
Mark Faust, the founder of Echelon
Management International, was also in the crowd.
During our conversation, I discovered that he is a neighbor of several friends
of mine.
Congressional candidates included Tom Brinkman,
Pat
DeWine, and Jean Schmidt.
Greg Hartmann confirmed to me that he
is running for Secretary of State and not Congress.
April 20, 2005
Six Congressional candidates gave two-minute speeches at the Clermont County
Central Committee meeting.
They were Steve Austin, Tom Brinkman,
Pat
DeWine, Bob McEwen, Jean Schmidt,
and David R. Smith.
Other business conducted included the updating of our endorsement policy and
Constitution.
Nearly 60 people attended.
April 19, 2005
Lori Viars provided the following regarding The Fifth Annual Ohio Family Lobby
Day:
144 Christian Conservative leaders attended Ohio Family Lobby Day on April 19 in
Columbus. The annual event is sponsored by a coalition of pro-family groups
including Christian Coalition of Ohio, Pro-Family Network, Citizens for
Community Values, and Family First. Attendees divided into smaller groups to
visit state representatives and state senators, encouraging support for:
- a bill to ban abortion (sponsored by Rep Tom Brinkman)
- a bill to ban gay adoption (sponsored by Rep Tim
Schaffer)
- a protective "Terri Schiavo" bill
(sponsored by Senator Jeff
Jacobson)
- the Community Defense Act to tighten regulations on strip clubs (sponsored by Rep
Linda Reidelbach &
Senator Ron
Amstutz)
- a "Covenant Marriage" bill which would allow couples to
choose between a regular marriage license & a Covenant Marriage license
(sponsored by Sen. Jay Hottinger & Rep
Keith
Faber)
- a bill requiring a Family Impact Statement, similar to fiscal impact statements (sponsored by Rep
Ron
Hood)
- opposition to HB 158 which would promote/expand gambling
- the Academic Bill of Rights, SB 24, to protect religious freedom on college campuses
(sponsored by Sen. Larry Mumper)
In a well-received luncheon speech, former
Congressman Bob McEwen likened our freedom to a 3-legged stool or tripod:
- Economic Liberty - free enterprise creates wealth
- Political Liberty - allows people to save, invent, and produce
- Spiritual Liberty - recognizes the unique worth of every individual created by God
McEwen said all three legs were necessary to
create the wealthiest, most powerful nation on earth. He said, "Look at
countries around the world. The greater the freedom, the greater the wealth. The
greater the taxes, the greater the poverty." He added, "Our founders
recognized that our freedoms come not from men or from government, but from
God."
McEwen thanked the audience for making the difference for George W.
Bush in the state of Ohio. He said, "Ohio made the difference for the
nation. That is making a difference in the world. And none of it would've been
possible were it not for your hard work throughout Ohio." McEwen
complimented his 2nd District opponent Rep Tom Brinkman, and added, "I'm
glad Tom's on our side of these issues!"
Senator Jim Jordan, always a favorite with conservatives, spoke briefly, as did Representatives
Ron
Hood & Tom Brinkman. Greg Quinlan, Chris Hartkop, Tanya Lee, Chris Long &
Barry Sheets are to be commended on a successful Ohio Family Lobby Day.
I was honored to be a group leader and was privileged to escort Paula Westwood,
Donna Kimmet and another lady around the capitol.
(Mrs. Westwood is the Executive Director of Right to Life of Greater Cincinnati.)
April 12, 2005
The Brown County Republican Club and Central Committee meetings were held
at the Georgetown Library.
About 30 people attended.
Three Congressional candidates gave speeches and answered questions.
They were Pat
DeWine, Bob McEwen, and Jean Schmidt.
Tom Brinkman asked me to attend on his
behalf.
Mr. Brinkman could not attend due to the late night budget vote in Columbus.
He maintained his 100% voting record and kept his promise to vote no on higher
taxes and/or any cuts to the local government fund.
In addition to Tom Brinkman, Danny
Bubp and Todd Book
also voted no on the budget.
April 11, 2005
About 25 people attended the Adams County Central Committee meeting in
West Union.
Steve Austin, Tom Brinkman,
Pat
DeWine, and Bob McEwen were the
only Congressional candidates to attend.
Jennifer Black did a fine job representing Jean Schmidt.
