Disclaimer
This newsletter is not sanctioned by the GOP, ORP, or any organization, or affiliation. I am fully and solely responsible for its' content. Although I strive for accuracy, this is not "The Gospel according to John." Additionally, I don't necessarily try to be "fair and balanced." After all, I didn't get into politics to be a news reporter. My agenda is to influence public policy consistent with Southern Ohio conservative values. For more information on my motivations or how to get involved, see: What is a Central Committee?

Prayers Needed
Brown County Clerk of Courts
Tina Meranda continues to appreciate all prayers.
Former Clermont County Chairman and Retired State Representative, Rose Vesper, has not been well and needs our prayers.
Brown County’s Rick Eagan was seriously injured and needs prayer.

Don’t give that $100 to the Ohio Dept. of Taxation!
A dollar-for-dollar tax CREDIT (not deduction) is available on the Ohio IT 1040 income tax form. Ohio taxpayers have a choice. We can divert that $100 to candidates running for state offices. It’s the same $100. Why send it to the dept. of taxation? Please send it to a candidate that qualifies for the tax credit. The credit is $50 for singles and $100 for married couples. You will get the full amount back when you file your Ohio IT 1040 (line #55). Call me if you have any questions about this or anything else. My number is 513-753-6440. And send your check to Friends of Becker | 925 Locust Lane | Cincinnati, OH | 45245-1313. If it is more convenient, you could use a credit card. This link takes you to a secured PayPal site. A PayPal account is not necessary. I will mail you a thank you receipt for your records. More information is here.

Now is the time to get involved
The Republican Party is always in need of good people (preferably conservative) who want to get involved. Contact your county’s Board of Elections to find out about running for the office of Precinct Committeeman. Most counties require that you get five people in your neighborhood to sign a petition to put your name on the ballot for the May 4th election. The petition filing deadline is February 18th. Your Board of Elections can provide you with everything you need and answer all of your questions. Call me and/or see What is a Central Committee for more information.

A Preview of the 2010 Statewide Races
US Senate
Rob Portman is endorsed by the Ohio Republican Party.
Tom Ganley is also a candidate.

Governor (Apportionment Board Office)
John Kasich is endorsed by the Ohio Republican Party.

Auditor of State (Apportionment Board Office)
Mary Taylor is endorsed by the Ohio Republican Party.

State Treasurer
Josh Mandel is endorsed by the Ohio Republican Party.

Secretary of State (Apportionment Board Office)

Jon Husted is endorsed by the Ohio Republican Party.
Sandy O'Brien is also a candidate.

Attorney General
Dave Yost and Mike DeWine are both candidates. The Ohio Republican Party has not yet made an endorsement decision in this race.
Commentary: Dave Yost is a very conservative Delaware County Prosecutor. He is right on the issues, a nice guy, and a rising star in the GOP. Dave has also worked very hard at winning the hearts and minds of Ohioans. He has attended 46 Lincoln Day Dinners, visited over 60 counties and is endorsed by more than 70 percent of Ohio’s GOP county prosecutors.
Former Senator Mike DeWine is much more controversial. Please see my
September 2009 edition for additional details.

Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice
Justice
Maureen O'Conner is endorsed by the Ohio Republican Party.

Ohio Supreme Court
Judith Lanzinger and Paul Pfeifer are endorsed by the Ohio Republican Party.

What is the
Apportionment Board?
The Board consists of the Governor, Secretary of State, State Auditor, and a Republican and Democrat selected from the Legislature. Control is important because the Board redraws the State House and State Senate districts based on the 2010 national census. The Party redrawing the district lines will have a huge advantage in determining control of the legislature in 2012 and beyond. The 2010 legislature will redraw the US House districts.

Congress
Jean Schmidt has two Republican challengers for her congressional seat: C. Michael Kilburn is a Warren County Commissioner. And Bryan Hawkins is a City of Milford Councilman.

Becker for State Senate
The Primary Election is 28 months away. I've been meeting with people, getting ideas, and raising money.

Past Events
December 11, 2009
Endorsements were a contentious topic at the ORP State Central Committee meeting. Three votes were noteworthy:

1.    No endorsement in the Attorney General race. Per Dave Yost’s request, I went along with this. Dave did not want a divisive floor fight. He took the high road.

2.    The committee endorsed Justice Paul Pfeifer. I voted “NO” and addressed the committee regarding Justice Pfeifer’s repeated and flagrant failures to support the GOP platform. He is very liberal. Three years ago, he flirted with the idea of switching Parties. I suggested that we “send him packing.” (This was a roll call vote.)

3.    The committee failed to pass a resolution that would prohibit any Party services from being provided to Justice Pfeifer’s re-election efforts. I supported that resolution.

Text Box: I not only agree with these people, I am one of them.I’m concerned that those votes may divide, or worse -- highlight the divide, between the ORP and the voters. Conservatives and TEA Party participants have been clear about desired governmental policy and the candidates to implement it. I not only agree with these people, I am one of them. Unfortunately, my like minded colleagues and I are a minority on the State Central Committee. Going forward, it will be interesting to see how the County Parties and the various GOP clubs endorse. Butler County has led the way by endorsing Dave Yost.

December 10, 2009
The ORP hosted another successful Christmas Party at the Northpoint Conference Center. Many officials, statewide candidates, and congressional candidates attended.

December 8, 2009
About 80 people attended a TEA Party meeting at the Union Twp (Clermont County) Civic Center. The crowd was learning about Party politics, government 101, and how to get involved.

December 4, 2009
I very much enjoyed the opportunity to address the Shawnee University Campus Republicans at their second annual Christmas party. My primary topic was the Apportionment Board. Stephen Caraway spoke on behalf of Jean Schmidt. Terry Johnson was the keynote speaker.

December 4, 2009
Hamilton County Coroner O’dell Owens and Cheye Calvo, the Director of Expansion at The SEED Foundation (
www.seedfoundation.com) were the keynote speakers at Chip Gerhardt’s First Friday Luncheon. Mr. Owens gave a particularly moving speech about the connection between crime and education (or lack of).
