Disclaimer
Nobody asked me to include this, but it seems like a good idea:
This newsletter is not sanctioned by the GOP, ORP, or any organization, or
affiliation. I am fully and solely responsible for its' content. Although I
strive for accuracy, this is not "The Gospel according to John."
Additionally, I don't necessarily try to be "fair and balanced."
After all, I didn't get into politics to be a news reporter. My agenda is to
influence public policy consistent with Southern Ohio conservative values. For
more information on my motivations or how to get involved, see: What is a Central Committee?
Prayers
Needed
Brown County Clerk of Courts Tina
Meranda continues to
appreciate all prayers.
Former Clermont County Chairman and Retired State Representative, Rose Vesper,
has not been well and needs our prayers.
Senator Bob Schuler has passed away. Please keep his
family in your prayers.
A
Preview of the 2010 Statewide Races
Rob
Portman for US
Senate
It appears that Rob may have a serious challenger from the Northeast. That may
help him to generate free media and more name recognition.
Bob Paduchik is Rob’s campaign manager. Anyone interested in helping with the
campaign should contact Christa Criddle at 513-476-5707.
Governor (Apportionment Board Office)
Kevin
Coughlin has announced his candidacy.
Todd
Kritzwiser is a local
candidate who is also seeking the office. He can be contacted at 937-444-Ohio
(6446). Todd lives in Brown County's Sterling Twp. near Williamsburg.
John
Kasich has officially
announced.
Auditor of State (Apportionment Board Office)
Mary
Taylor has announced
her candidacy for re-election.
State Treasurer
Josh
Mandel has announced
his candidacy and appears to be running unopposed in the primary. He has a great announcement video.
Secretary of State (Apportionment Board Office)
Jon
Husted and Sandy
O'Brien have
announced their candidacies.
Attorney General
Dave
Yost has announced
his candidacy. Mike DeWine has formed a committee but has not
indicated what office, if any, that he may run for.
Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice
Former Attorney General, Jim Petro, is planning to run against Justice Maureen O'Conner. It is important to note that Justice
O'Connor would have to resign and Ted Strictland would appoint a Democrat.
Ohio Supreme Court
Judith Lanzinger and Paul Pfeifer will run for re-election.
What is the Apportionment Board?
The Board consists of the Governor, Secretary of State, State Auditor, and a
Republican and Democrat selected from the Legislature. Control is important
because the Board redraws the State House and State Senate districts based on
the 2010 national census. The Party redrawing the district lines will have a
huge advantage in determining control of the legislature in 2012 and beyond.
The legislature redraws the US House districts.
Becker
for State Senate
The Primary Election is 33 months away. I've been meeting with people, getting
ideas, and raising money. The Wall Street Journal published a great article
called, “Soak the Rich, Lose the Rich.
Americans know how to use the moving van to escape high taxes.”
Also, this is a stump speech that I
published last month.
Many thanks to Matt Hurley for making it possible.
Past
Events
June 18, 2009
About 25 people attended a joint meeting of the Clermont TEA Party and the
Cincinnati 912 Project at Putters in Milford. I’m excited by the grass roots
movement and enthusiasm.
June 12, 2009
A large crowd attended a fundraiser for Rob
Portman at the Uible
Buffalo Farm in New Richmond. Mr. Portman talked about some of the problems
facing our nation. He also acknowledged that he may have a well funded primary
challenger.
June 11, 2009
Chip Gerhardt and Jim Benedict sponsored another successful event at Bootsy’s.
UC Football Coach Brian Kelly was the keynote speaker.
June 9, 2009
The Brown County Central Committee and Club met to discuss finances and
upcoming parades, picnics, and festivals. They also unanimously appointed Connie
Patrick to fill the
unexpired term of Gail DeClaire who has retired.
June 6, 2009
About 200 people attended the annual ORP candidate training seminar in Dublin.
This is fabulous training for anyone planning to be a candidate or be part of a
candidate’s campaign. Major topics included: The campaign plan, media (paid,
earned, and new), fundraising, voter contact, get out the vote, and it ended
with a Q & A. They also showed a very funny video clip of
how not to make preemptive apologies.
June 3, 2009
The Anderson Twp GOP Club hosted about 25 people who heard WLW
Program Director, Darryl Parks. Mr. Parks discussed the importance of ratings
and revenue. He also explained the history of mass media, how it works today,
and its’ future.
June 1, 2009
Lori Viars sent me the following comments regarding the rally in
Westerville that we attended:
John Kasich's rally was a big success! Kasich spoke from a platform in front of a beautiful, historic barn, in one of Westerville's lovely parks. A large, excited crowd (estimated at well over 2,000) gathered to hear John Kasich publicly announce his run for Governor. The rally featured great music, lots of dignitaries, small business owners endorsing Kasich, and grassroots voters of all ages holding signs of support. Also there: Rep. Bill Batchelder (House Republican Leader); Rep. Josh Mandel (who is running for Ohio Treasurer); Prosecutor Dave Yost (candidate for Attorney General); State Representatives John Adams, Kris Jordan, Seth Morgan, Ron Maag, and many others.
Kasich said that since 2001, Ohio has not created a single new job. "We're deeper in the ditch," he noted, since Ted Strickland became Governor. 300,000 Ohioans are without jobs. But Kasich said we can "right this ship" with proper leadership. "We can fix this! We will cut taxes and create an entrepreneurial environment that will make Ohio great again!" he said.
May 28,
2009
ORP Chairman, Kevin
DeWine, hosted a conference call featuring Josh
Mandel to discuss and
promote his candidacy for State Treasurer. Additionally, Senate President, Bill Harris, discussed the status of the state
budget. Senator Jon Husted also talked about the budget. He
compared and contrasted it with the Democrat House version.
May 23, 2009
It was an honor and pleasure to be a guest on a Fairfield based Internet radio
program. It was the TIB (Truth in Blogging) All-Stars Show on the NIB Network.
The hosts of the Saturday evening program are Tom Blumer, Mark Garbett, and
Matt Hurley. Mr. Blumer also hosts the BizzyBlog. Mr. Garbett and Mr. Hurley hosts the
Weapons of Mass Discussion blog. Their mission is to hold the
GOP accountable and serve as watch dogs. Public scrutiny is always a good
thing.
My mission was to help the audience to understand the direction of the Ohio
Republican Party, our candidates, and our leaders. During my two hours, or so,
of air time, I explained that our message of fiscal and social conservatism is
not the problem and will not be changing. The execution of the message has been
the problem in the past.
I also explained the exciting changes that Chairman Kevin DeWine has initiated.
We talked about our three candidates for governor and how John Kasich’s unique
background qualifies him to be our anti-Taft candidate.
Senator Jon Husted’s residency issue was discussed and compared to former
Congressman Bob McEwen’s. Mr. McEwen’s issue was resolved during the primary
and I suggested that Senator Husted’s issue would also be resolved in his race
against Sandy O’Brian for Secretary of State. Regarding Senator Husted’s record
on taxes, I explained that Governor Taft was setting policy for the state. As
Speaker of the House, Mr. Husted was faced with two bad choices: Either pursue
a policy in opposition to the Governor and split the Party. Or maintain a
unified front, ride the “Taft train” off the cliff, and hope for the best. On
many conservative issues, our leadership in the legislature didn’t want to
embarrass Governor Taft. Therefore, we embarrassed ourselves in the next two
election cycles.
During the last segment of the program, the hosts gave me the opportunity to
plug my own candidacy for State Senate in 2012. I explained the district and my
potential options after redistricting in 2011. I also summarized my platform as
being pro-life, a Life Member of the NRA and a concealed carry permit holder. I
explained my ideas for cutting taxes and spending to make Ohio a business
friendly state. That will create jobs and economic growth.
May 20, 2009
At the Clermont County Central Committee meeting, Tim
Rudd, Clerk of Municipal Court, explained
his office and that 22 of 24 eligible Ohio counties have separate Municipal
Court Clerks. Chairman Rudd also talked about sample ballots, the need for
Republican “truth squads”, and staffing the fair booth.
May 18, 2009
A dozen members of the Union Twp (Clermont County) Central Committee met to
discuss candidates for 2009. Brian Ford proposed a mission statement for the
committee’s consideration: “Our purpose is to develop effective, accountable,
and responsive leadership in Union Township. Our vision is to be known as the
party that listens, learns, and leads.”
May 15, 2009
The State Central Committee will form a 15 member panel to screen candidates
for the Chief Justice race. Kay Ayres gave a report about the Jo
Ann Davidson Leadership Institute,
the strong attendance and excitement at Lincoln Day Dinners, and the TEA
Parties. Jason Mauk
discussed some housekeeping items and introduced new staff members. Chairman
DeWine gave a report of his first 100 days and the building blocks of the
Party. We also went into executive session to review and discuss internal
polling results. Chief Justice candidate, Jim
Petro, greeted us as
we exited the meeting.
May 14, 2009
The Politics at the Pub was the best attended ever. Statewide candidates
included Maureen O'Conner, Mary
Taylor, and Dave
Yost. It was also a
pleasant surprise to find Lawrence County Commissioner, Jason Stephens, in the
crowd.
