Disclaimer
This
newsletter is not sanctioned by the GOP, ORP, or any organization, or
affiliation. I am fully and solely responsible for its content. Although I
strive for accuracy, this is not "The Gospel according to John."
Additionally, I don't necessarily try to be "fair and balanced."
After all, I didn't get into politics to be a news reporter. My agenda is to
influence public policy consistent with Southern Ohio conservative values. For
more information on my motivations or how to get involved, see: What
is a Central Committee?
Kudos
to Attorney General Mike DeWine
On his first day in
office, as promised, Mike DeWine added Ohio to the list of (now 25) states
opposing nationalized health care.
Congratulations
My SCC colleague Christa Criddle is the new SW Ohio Field Rep. for Dave
Yost.
Doug Cade is now the Lawrence County Engineer.
Joe
Uecker is the new
chairman of the House Commerce and Labor Committee.
Danny Bubp is the new chairman of the House Judiciary and Ethics Committee.
Speaker Pro Tempore Lou Blessing will chair the House Rules and Reference Committee.
Bob Mecklenborg will chair the House State Government and Elections Committee.
Peter Stautberg will chair the House Ways and Means Committee.
Welcome
to Union Township
After Jean
Schmidt
vacated her
Batavia office, Union Township Trustee, Matt Beamer, suggested that she move into some
unused office space inside the Civic Center with no expense to the taxpayers.
Jean’s office hours will be 9am – 12pm Tuesdays and Thursdays.
New
Year's Resolutions for State Legislators
Some of these are
good and some I’m not too sure about, but they are worth discussing.

Ohio's
Marriage Penalty
It is a little known fact that Ohio's married taxpayers are frequently better
off Filing Separate returns instead of Joint when both spouses have taxable
income. This is due to Ohio’s progressive income tax. The more you make, the
greater percentage they take. The marriage penalty begins when Joint Taxable
Income reaches $5,800! For more information, I've updated an information page for the 2010 tax year. Additionally,
I've updated an Excel spreadsheet calculator for taxpayers to calculate exactly
how much they are personally impacted by Ohio's marriage penalty. From experience,
I can tell you that few legislators are aware of this problem and even fewer
seem to care. That will change after I'm elected to the Ohio House!
When you file your Federal 1040 and your Ohio IT 1040, please remember the
check-off box to contribute $3 and $1 respectively to the major political
parties. The Ohio and county Republican Parties will benefit.
On the subject of taxes, I am registered with the IRS to do tax returns
including e-file. Please contact me if I can be of service.

Past
Events
January 19, 2011
About 100 people attended the Clermont County Central Committee meeting in
Batavia. Jean Schmidt
called in from Washington to report that the House voted to repeal Obamacare.
She also presented multiple options to replace it and took questions from the
crowd. Chairman Rudd argued that “freedom” was the meaning of the last election
and that many media outlets have muddied that. He also spoke out forcefully
against the federal judge who has created havoc in the Hamilton County Juvenile
Court Judge election. Mary Lynne Birck, George Pattison, and Vince Faris gave
candidate reports. Joe Uecker and Danny Bubp gave reports from the statehouse. The
crowd erupted in exuberant applause when Joe mentioned that his committee would
consider Right-to-Work legislation. Carl Dorsch proposed
expanding the Ohio Political Contributions Tax Credit to include political
parties.
January 18, 2011
Citizens
for Community Values (CCV)
hosted a Values Action Team (VAT) meeting in Columbus. Alex Tornero chaired the
meeting and about 20 people attended. Topics discussed included Surrogacy
Legislation, New Constitution Concerns, and a Heartbeat
Bill. State
Representative and Majority Whip John Adams also attended the meeting. He and I talked
about the caucus and my candidacy to join the team after the 2012 election.
January 9 - 10, 2011
It was a big two days in Columbus. After attending the swearings of Jon Husted
and Mike DeWine, we held our state central committee meeting. I was given the
honor of delivering the invocation. Jon Husted, Dave Yost, and Josh Mandel
addressed the committee. Chief Justice O’Connor swore in Kevin DeWine for his
second two-year term as Ohio GOP Chairman. All other officers were also re-elected.
On Monday, I attended the swearings of Dave Yost, John Kasich, and Josh Mandel.
All of the two-day events were well attended and festive. From Clermont County,
I saw Matt Beamer, Jim Bushman, Linda
Fraley, Jeff Hardin, Tom Niehaus,
Jean
Schmidt, and Joe
and Patti Uecker. From
Brown County, I saw Bill Herdman, Mariah Votel, Jessie Millikan, and Jeanne
Glassmeyer. I also saw Adams County’s Danny Bubp.
January 4, 2011
Nearly 200 people attended the Union Twp Tea Party at the Eastgate Holiday Inn. We heard
committee updates and a presentation from The
1851 Center for Constitutional Law.
A few of the elected officials who attended included Archie Wilson, Joe
Uecker, Linda
Fraley, and Don
White.
December 21, 2010
Although Jean Schmidt
was in Washington, her staff hosted her annual Christmas party in Kenwood. She
addressed the crowd via telephone. Guests from Clermont County included Joe
Uecker, Tom Mantel,
Matt Beamer, Bob McGee, Karen Tracy, Peter Schmidt, Gary and Jennifer Black. It
was also great to see Steven Caraway and Brian Baldridge from Adams County.
December 15, 2010
About 40 people attended the Adams County Christmas Party ongratulations to the new club officers:
Garry Benner, President; Chuck Dailey, Vice President; Bill McFarland,
Secretary; and Stephen Caraway, Treasurer. It was also great to see Doug and
Norma Green from Brown County.
December 14, 2010
The Scioto County GOP Club held their annual Christmas party in New Boston.
Some of the notables included Rodney Barnett, Jon Mills, Key Reynolds, Dr.
Terry Johnson, Kevin
and Cindy Craft, and Rick Jones. About 50 people attended. Representative-elect
Johnson resigned as County Coroner. Dr. Adams is the only candidate, so far, to
replace him. Jon Mills is chairing a committee to examine the feasibility of a
permanent GOP HQ.
